The Babylonians are generally acknowledged to have initiated the practice and knowledge of astrology. Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and particular celestial events. Thus, in principle, and for over 2000 years, astrology and astronomy were the same knowledge.

Babylonian astrology was introduced in the early Greeks in the 4th century BC and by the studies of Plato, Aristotle and others, astrology came to be regarded as a knowledge. It was quickly adopted by the Romans (the Roman name for the zodiacal signs are still used today) and the Arabs and later on in the world.

While astrology was used before to achieve a sense of order in apparent chaos, it was quickly used to predict the weather, mainly for agricultural purposes. Which was eventually expanded to include forecasts of natural disasters, wars and other events distressing the human condition. After the success in these areas has been established, was a natural evolution for astrology to be used as a means to advise the kings and emperors, and in time, the population in general.

The zodiac (which is derived from the Greek word for circle of animals) are believed to have developed in ancient Egypt and later adopted by the Babylonians. In the early astrologers, he has twelve lunar cycles (ie, months) for the sun to restore to its original position. Then identified twelve constellations that were observed were related to the advance of the season and assigns the names of particular animals and persons (in Babylonia, for example, the rainy season was establish to occur when the sun was in a gathering which was the name of Aquarius, or water-carrier).

Around 2000 BC, the Babylonian astrologers believed that the sun, moon and five planets known at that time (Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Venus and Saturn) and have uncommon powers. March, for example, appears to be red and was associated with aggression and war.
